Cape Coast Castle

The Cape Coast Castle is one of the biggest castles still standing in Ghana today which was constructed by European forces, On a portion of the Gold Coast that subsequently came to be known as the Cape Coast, it all started as a Portuguese trade lodge built in 1555. The Swedish Africa Company built a permanent wooden stronghold in 1653 to facilitate the trading of gold and lumber after Sweden conquered the Cape Coast. The regional office of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board is located there, and it is currently a historical museum with a gift shop selling Ghanaian arts and crafts.

It was initially founded as a trading colony but eventually developed into one of the most significant sites along the path of the Atlantic slave trade. Standing in the very spot where hundreds of years of atrocities were allowed to be inflicted mercilessly upon black people was extremely emotional. Our guide Joe, was very patient, accommodating, and knowledgeable. He was able to answer all our questions. Thanks Joe for a fantastic and unforgettable day tour.
What we should know.

There were many hours drive each way. I expected a comfy van or something. Instead they brought me with 2 others in an old and small car.. En the end the to others wanted to do some shopping and I had to wait in that car for 2 hours before we could drive back home because the guide was affraid to instruct the 2 others!!
Cape Coast Day
Whitney_O, Jul 2024
We had a great day. The tour guide was very informative and communicated each step to us. There was heavy traffic on the way to Cape Coast but we made it to each destination. The van was very comfortable and safe. We were able to leave belongings in there while we explored.
Thank you George!

George is the smartest person ever. He deserves to be paid for because his level of customer service and patience is 10/10.
Recommended tour in the beautiful Ghana

The tour in Kakum National Park. Highly recommend to take the optional hike in the forest. The place by the ocean and coconuts palm trees, where we had lunch.
Good, but not easy or as advertised.

Overall, this was a worthwhile tour. However, some things to keep in mind: the drive from Accra is 3.5-4 hours long, and it is a very difficult drive full of hard roads, horrible traffic, and some terrifying driving. Additionally, our tour was not really as advertised. The car that took us did not have A/C, so the windows were down the entire trip and we were wind blown with dirt for 8 hours round trip. There was not Wi-Fi onboard as they said there would be. It said snacks and bottled water included, but we were given water once in 14 hours and no snacks, and we didn't eat lunch until 3:30pm after leaving at 6am. Seeing the castles is a harrowing experience and really valuable. If you get a good tour guide it's a really good experience. We got a good guide at one castle and not so much at the other. The park tour and canopy walk is cool, but it's pretty quick, 30 min in and 30 min out. It's literally just walking across the bridges and then leaving. The lodge with the crocodiles they just fed a croc some chicken and then we left. So, I would say, if you have the time, it is worth it, but it's definitely not an easy trip. Take your own water and snacks in case you need them. Bring a hand fan in case you're hot.
Awesome

I recommend this service anyday anytime. We were taken to the places that was stated. Free cofee/tea and snakes, the driver came quite early just to beat the day traffic. All in it a great experience and education. Thumbs up! Guys.
AMAZING!

This tour was amazing so many different activities and be prepared to do a lot of walking, but it was worth it, our tour guides George made sure we had a wonderful time along the way, I will definitely recommend this tour to anyone coming to Ghana.
Excellent Way to See Cape Coast in a Day
Deborah_M, Jun 2024
Good guides. Amazing historical and adventure spots. We saw Kakum National Park, Hans Cottage Botel, El Mina & Cape Coast Castles. The history of the enslavement of our ancestors is heavy, so the debrief spots made the load a lot lighter.Great way to see Cape coast during a day trip from Accra .
Definitely requires a return trip.
Bell_B, May 2024
Our tour guide and driver were on time, extremely friendly and courteous. George was particularly knowledgeable. The Elmina Castle and the Cape Coast Castle were very heart wrenching and at times emotional when we look at man’s inhumanity toward his fellow man. No wonder some in American would not like this part of history to be told.

I had a great day along Cape Coast! Portia was a great guide! The driver Enoch could have driven a littler slower. All of us were feeling a little scared and some even sick. However, the tour itself and the stops we made were great and very informative!

It was well organised. The tour guide is friendly and helpful. I really enjoyed the trip, especially the national park. Will stay for the bird watch next time.
Emotional Trip to Elmina Castle & Cape Coast
O_K, May 2024
This was the best tour we went on during our stay in Accra, without a doubt. It is quite an emotional rollercoaster and historically completes the circle between the Caribbean, Americas and Africa for the Atlantic trade. The stories from the castle are quite harrowing, so it's best to put on your emotional armour for the day. Joe our guide was excellent. He was attentive, patient, conversational and a mine of information about the trip and contemporary Ghanaian life.
Great all day tour
Sonisha_S, May 2024
This was a great all day tour. Our tour guide George was amazing, really informative, a safe driver and just so helpful. He was happy to answer any questions we had. I would definitely recommend any of my family and friends to do the tour with him. All the stops on the tour were amazing. From walking in tree tops, seeing crocodiles, and the amazing history of the two castles. When you do the tree top walk I would suggest you have a cross body bag or pouch to hold your things, or pockets big enough to hold a water bottle as you will need it as the walk up to the bridges is a workout! You learn so much on the tours of the castle. The guides are so Knowledgeable. It really makes you think about everything that went on there. Also we had lunch at a lovely restaurant on the beach and the food was so tasty and reasonably priced.
